Ancient City of Pyramids 'Teotihuacan' reopens to visits
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - DECEMBER 05: The ancient City of Pyramids 'Teotihuacan' has reopened on Sunday, Dec. 05, as the COVID-19 restrictions were eased in Mexico.
Located 50 km (30 miles) northeast of modern-day Mexico City, the ancient site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Built between the 1st and 7th centuries A.D., it is characterized by the vast size of its monuments – in particular, the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, laid out on geometric and symbolic principles.
Human occupation of the valley of Teotihuacan began before the Christian era, but it was only between the 1st and the 7th centuries A.D. that the settlement developed into one of the largest ancient cities in the Americas, with at least 25,000 inhabitants.
The place is the most important and largest city of pre-Aztec central Mexico.
The Aztec name of Teotihuacan means "the place where gods were created". (Footage by Sinan Dogan/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
