Scene from Birth of a Nation, 1915
The controversial landmark film The Birth of a Nation, directed by D.W. Griffith (1875-1948), made cinema history for its length, cost, directorial techniques, and epic scope. It also enraged black Americans and progressive whites with its overt racism and celebration of the Ku Klux Klan. But its innovative action shots, cross-cutting edits, and close-ups introduced a new narrative style to film even as its message sparked outrage.
