Alkmaar was the first place where Jews were allowed to settle in the Netherlands.In 1804 this building was purchased, but got its current appearance in 1844.During the Nazi occupation the Jews were deported in 1942 and the synagogue looted. After the war, in 1952, it became a church. The Jewish community was able to purchase it back in 2009 and renovation began. In 2009 / 5772 it was reinstalled as a synagogue.
