Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau was a complex of over forty concentration and extermination camps situated in Nazi occupied Poland during the second world war where the murder of mainly Jewish people as well as gypsies, romany and other 'undesirables' was undertaken by medical experimentation under Joseph Mengele or execution by firing squad or more commonly in the gas chambers of this largest of death camps where an estimated one and a half million people perished in what is known as the Holocaust
