Ghost city: Unveiling Rudnik's forgotten history in Russia
RUDNIK, RUSSIA - MARCH 08: A view of buildings as the first settlements founded by Gulag prisoners in Rudnik, Russia on March 08, 2024. Vorkuta's history traces back to the construction of its inaugural mine in the early 1930s, undertaken by prisoners of Vorkutlag. In 1943, the city was officially granted its status, leading to development expanding to the opposite side of the river, with Rudnik emerging as one of its neighborhoods. As of the late 1980s, Rudnik had begun experiencing abandonment, and by the early 2000s, it was fully closed down. Residents were relocated to apartments in Vorkuta during this period.
