The Canal Boat, 1888.
ENGLAND - AUGUST 06: A photograph titled 'The Canal Boat', taken by Colonel Joseph Gale (c 1835-1906) in 1888. A man walks a gangplank to load a canal boat with a cargo of cane bundles, as the delivery horse takes a rest on the bank. Whitehouse & Son, from Brentford, own the boat, and they advertise on the stern that they are 'Carriers from London to Reading'. Joseph Gale specialised in naturalistic photographs of rural life and figures in landscapes. He was one of the first members of the Linked Ring Brotherhood and was also a member of the Royal Photographic Society. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
