One of two fans of Biafran football play

LAGOS, NIGERIA: One of two fans of Biafran football players descends from a prison van that brought them to the Federal High Court in Lagos 11 April 2005. The Nigerian court has granted bail but with strident conditional terms to 53 footballers charged for treasonable felony for participating in a football tournament organized to mobilize ethnic support for the defunct "Biafra Republic". In 1967, sessionist leader Emeka Ojukwu proclaimed a "Republic of Biafra" after the killing of top army officers and politicians of ethnic Igbo origin in the aftermath of a 1966 military coup. This plunged Nigeria into a 30-month civil war in which more than a million people died. AFP PHOTO / PIUS UTOMI EKPEI (Photo credit should read PIUS UTOMI EKPEI/AFP via Getty Images)
