Members of Sri Lanka's influential Buddhist clergy handover a petition to the island's Human Rights Commission in Colombo on April 7, 2010. The Buddhist monks, who belong to the National Bhikku Front, were beaten and arrested this week by police, for staging a fast to demand the release of the jailed former army chief, Sarath Fonseka. The monks have vowed to stage a mass rally to keep up pressure on the government to free Fonseka, who was detained on February 8. Fonseka, who failed to unseat Rajapakse in January elections, is being court martialled for engaging in politics before he retired and corrupt arms deals. AFP PHOTO/Ishara S.
