CHICAGO, UNITED STATES: Lawyer for Dennis Emerson, Charles Schiedel, is sworn in prior to giving testimony at a clemency hearing in Chicago 17 October 2002. Emerson was sentenced to death for murder after he stabbed and burned a woman during a robbery in 1979. Emerson has been sentenced to die no fewer than three times for the 1979 murder. A blend of errors by the trial judge, prosecutors and one of Emerson's attorneys has twice caused appeals courts to order a new trial or sentencing hearing.
