Turkish cartographers follow in the footsteps of Piri Reis in Antarctica
ANTARCTICA - FEBRUARY 28: General Directorate of Mapping, affiliated with the Turkish Ministry of National Defense, and the Office of Navigation, Hydrography and Oceanography of the Turkish Naval Forces, participate in the 9th National Antarctic Science Expedition, conducting measurements both on land and at sea, on February 28, 2025. Continuing their work in the field of cartography in the footsteps of Piri Reis, the General Directorate of Mapping, under the Ministry of National Defense, establishes new measurement stations for campaign-type surveys, using data gathered from terrestrial geodetic points to monitor and evaluate the region's tectonic movements. Meanwhile, the Office of Navigation, Hydrography and Oceanography of the Turkish Naval Forces, for the first time, creates new bathymetric maps in Gaul Cove on Horseshoe Island, gathering valuable data about the marine structure of the region.
