Greenpeace Protests Coal Energy As Coalition Negotiations Continue
BERLIN, GERMANY - OCTOBER 26: Activists from Greenpeace stand next to 10 tons of coal they dumped in front of the Chancellery to protest the coal energy policy stance of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her party, the German Christian Democrats (CDU) on October 26, 2017 in Berlin, Germany. Coaltion negotiations between the CDU, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the German Greens Party (Buendnis 90/Die Gruenen) are going into their third round today and the focus today will be energy. The Greens are demanding that Germany's top 20 coal-fired power plants be shuttered by 2020, while the other parties are seeking a much slower route. Armin Laschet of the Bavarian Christian Democrats (CSU), the sister party to the CDU, has even announced that the CSU will abandon the coalition negotiations if a hard stance against the coal industry is adopted.
