Yellow-margined box turtle in Okinawa - HD stock video

The yellow-margined box turtle (Cuora flavomarginata) slowly protudes its head halfway out of the hinged shell. Middle-distance shot. The yellow-margined box turtle is native to Iriomote Island, where these images were taken, and also Ishigaki Island. Living in wooded areas, the turtles flourish in humid environments and are often found in marshes or close to streams. They grow up to a maximum length of 19cm. The carapace (upper shell) forms a high dome. The plastron (ventral shell below the belly) is hinged and movable. The turtle can withdraw its head, four limbs and tail completely inside the shell and close it. Omnivorous, it lives on a diverse diet ranging from berries and other plant matter to insects, worms and snails. Designated as a natural national treasure of Japan.
