Transitional epithelium is a stratified (many layers of cells) epithelium that is adaptable when the bladder undergoes distention (filling with urine) becoming flatter without coming apart. The superficial cells near the surface are larger and more rounded than deeper cells. This type of epithelium is also found lining the ureter.
