View taken 20 August 1937 from the Eiffel Tower of the Trocadero during the 1937 World exhibition, or Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (International Exposition dedicated to Art and Technology in Modern Life) which was held in Paris. Facing each other, are the German pavilion (R), conceived by architect Albert Speer, with the symbols of the Nazi state, an eagle and the swastika, and the Soviet Union pavilion (L), built by Boris Iofan and topped with a gigantic statue of a male worker and a female peasant, their hands thrusting a hammer and a sickle together (Labourer and Kolkhoz Woman, by Vera Mukhina), in a symbol of communist union. Both Speer and Iofan were awarded gold medals for their respective designs. AFP PHOTO (Photo credit should read OFF/AFP via Getty Images)
