Shirley Williams, British politician, circa March 2005. Williams was originally a Labour politician, becoming MP of Harwich in 1954. She later resigned from the party and was one of the 'Gang of Four' rebels who founded the Social Democratic Party in 1981, which later became the Liberal Democrats. Williams was created a life peer in 1993 as Baroness Williams of Crosby. She retired as an active member of the House of Lords in 2016 and is currently Professor Emerita of Electoral Politics at Harvard University's Kennedy School.
