Sidney Street Seige

Police holding back large crowds of people from 100 Sidney Street, Stepney following a siege and gun battle between members of the Gardstein gang, (Latvian immigrant burglars) and the police who were assisted by members of the Scots Guards. Our Picture Shows: Members of the Royal Artillery returning to their barracks following the siege. The artillery did not take part in the siege. Although the Gardstein gang, had already killed three policemen and injured two others when fighting their way out of the interrupted Houndsditch robbery, nobody envisaged the two men in 100 Sidney Street opening a gun battle and fighting to the death when they were surrounded with no possibility of escape, 3rd January 1911 .
