French Legionnaires Join US Marines During "Operation Restore Hope"

Members of the French Foreign Legion join the patrol group with 28,000 United States Marines sent during Operation Restore Hope to protect relief workers, whose job was becoming increasingly difficult due to clan violence in the city; the death toll claimed the lives of 10,000 Somalians in 10 months alone. On December 3, 1992 the United States Army, on the orders of President George H.W. Bush, launched Operation Restore Hope, under the cover of the United Nations Operation in Somalia (UNOSOM), dubbed as a humanitarian mission to feed starving people following a prolonged drought that killed thousands of citizens.
