John Edward Gray

circa 1870: English naturalist John Edward Gray (1800 - 1875), founder of the Greenwich Society of Useful Knowledge. Originally a medical student, Gray was more interested in botany. He wrote 'The Natural Arrangement of British Plants' (1824) with his father. As assistant keeper and then Keeper (1870-74) of Zoology, he significantly increased the collection of the British Museum.
