Thousands look as ornate floats are paraded during latter part of Kyoto’s iconic Gion Matsuri festival

Video footage taken on July 24 in central Kyoto shows highlights from the “atomatsuri” latter portion of the city’s famed Gion Matsuri festival. Eleven tall, ornately decorated floats called “yamahoko” pulled by teams formed the procession which was joined for the first time in 193 years by the Takayama team bearing a “karabitsu,” a special container for valuable scrolls, in place of a float. An estimated 33,000 spectators lined the streets during the procession. (The Asahi Shimbun)
