The 10th annual Academy Awards at The Biltmore Bowl Conclude - HD stock video

Douglas Fairbanks gives a speech for Darryl Zanuck, who receives the first ever Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Humourist Bob Burns watches from the sidelines. He will be the master of ceremonies when the Award Banquet begins later in the evening. Perhaps the most famous wooden celebrity of the time is ventriloquist dummy Charlie McCarthy. Ventriloquist Edgar Bergen is his "right hand man" so to speak, and he receives a special wooden statuette for his work with Charlie, but Charlie believes he should have won the award instead of Edgar. The two joke around like they disagree but they remain inseparable. Joseph Schildkraut is presented an award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Captain Alfred Dreyfus in the film The Life of Emile Zola. British actor and Test cricketer Charles Aubrey Smith presents Joseph with his award, but mistakenly gives him a statuette instead of the plaque he was supposed to receive. For the sixth year in a row, Walt Disney wins all of the animation awards. Walt is obviously proud and happy that he has won the awards. Spencer Tracy wins the award for Best Acting for his role in Captains Courageous, but he is too sick to attend the awards banquet. In his stead, his wife steps in to accept his award. Louis B. Mayer, Luise Rainer, Louise Tracy, and Frank Capra pose together for photographs. Since Spencer couldn't attend, this is as close as the press will get to having a photo with the best actress and best actor of the year. The photographers were waiting for this shot and Miss Parsons calls it the "high spot of the evening." A multitude of flash bulbs are left in its wake.
