INT
Robert Jenrick MP (Communities Secretary) interview SOT.
- ABOUT ANNOUNCEMENTS BEING MADE ABOUT PUBS AND RESTAURANTS CLOSING VIA THE NEWSPAPERS
- The number of cases are rising in north and NW and other places like Nottingham
- We are giving a proportionate and localised response to that
- We have to avoid blanket changes to the rules that has such an impact
ABOUT KILLING OFF PUBS AND RESTAURANTS IN THESE AREAS -
- No decision has been made about further measures /
- None of us want to close pubs early or at all /
- The longer that we are indoors the more likely it is the virus transmits to other people /
ABOUT THE EVIDENCE THAT COVID SPREADS MORE EASILY IN PUBS AND RESTAURANTS -
- We are prioritising education and work spaces /
- If we need to take action at hospitality industry we don't want to but if we have to we will /
- The hospitality sector has done huge work, but it common sense that the more interaction you have indoors the more likely it will spread /
- We are not an outlier in this policy, this happens in other countries and cities /
- We are led by the evidence, right we take action /
- We will listen to the science and take action /
ABOUT ANNOUNCING IT IN THE NEWSPAPERS -
- I don't know what the newspapers are reporting or where their sources are /
- We review the data every week we speak to local leaders and directors of health, then decisions are taken /
- It would not be right to announce things to the media /
- We don't control what newspapers choose to print, that's not the way we operate /
- We speak to local communities and then make announcements in due course /
ABOUT LEADERS NOT BEING VERY HAPPY -
- I speak to local leaders regularly /
- The council in Nottinghamshire are working very well /
- We are announcing extra funding today /
