Palestinian scholars protest in Gaza against French insults of Islam

GAZA CITY, GAZA - OCTOBER 26: Palestinian scholars on Monday (Oct. 26) staged a protest in Gaza against French insults of Islam. The demonstration was organized by the Association of "Palestinian Scholars". The protesters marched to the French Cultural Center, carrying signs and banners reading "Support for the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace," denouncing the insult to Islam, the Prophet Muhammad, and the sanctities. Ihsan Ashour, Mufti of Khan Yunis said insulting Islam and the prophet does not bring stability and security to the offending countries. “The head of democratic country speaks about freedom of religion, freedom of prisoners and prevents aggression,” said Ashour, addressing the protesters during the demonstration. In response to the French offensive, the mufti called on Muslims to boycott French products and cut off economic relations with France. In recent weeks, French President Emmanuel Macron has attacked Islam and the Muslim community, accusing Muslims of "separatism." He described Islam as “a religion in crisis all over the world.” This coincided with a provocative move by Charlie Hebdo, a left-wing French satirical magazine infamous for publishing anti-Islamic caricatures that have drawn widespread anger and outrage across the Muslim world. Earlier this year, it republished cartoons insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad. The caricatures were first published in 2006 by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, sparking a wave of protests. France has recently witnessed a controversy over the statements of a large section of politicians targeting Islam and Muslims after the incident of a teacher was killed on October 16, due to his insult to the Prophet Muhammad.
