- The death march until we we liberated by the British incidentally lasted seven days / during that time we were not given a scrap of food nor a sip of water, for seven days / people were weak already from prolonged hunger over the years / on top of that for six days, nothing / it meant that some people were literally skeletons, bone and skin with nothing in between, their heart still beating but their minds no longer worked / I'll tell you another incident; on that same barge, our barge ended up close to shore, the SS guards had gone, abandoned that barge, it was a very dark night / we found out that the barge was close to shore; you could jump into the water and make your way ashore / once we realised that in that manner you could get off the barge, everyone who still had an ounce of strength began clambering out, jumping, but there were quite a number of people, who sat there completely unaware, their minds no longer functioned, their hearts were beating, but they were no longer alive with a human mind, just sat there listlessly not knowing what was going on and while people jumped they just remained sitting on the barge / while this was happening, my mother encouraged me to jump, I was frightened, she was with me, we were marching together, we found each other / the SS quite unbelievably came back as dawn broke and they were very upset at seeing what we'd done / they divided into two, some of them boarded the barge, and shot all these poor people who no longer could think how to save themselves / we heard the shots because we were nearby / others came ashore and rounded us up, but instead of lining us up to shoot us they formed us into a column and we marched / it was during that period of the march that the British tank column saved us / so again, these were things one couldn't predict and you couldn't sav...
