General Election 2024: John Swinney press conference following results; Part 1 of 3 SCOTLAND: Port of Leith: INT John Swinney MSP (SNP Leader) press conference SOT - First thing I want to do is congratulate Sir Keir Starmer on his emphatic election victory this morning and wish him well as he assumes office later on today as Prime Minister - It goes without saying that last night was an incredibly tough night for the Scottish National Party and I am very sorry to be losing so many able members of Parliament and candidates who were unsuccessful, and that so many staff who work so well to support our MPs will also not be able to serve in the way they have up until now, and I'm sorry about the difficulties that will cause individuals - This tough night adds to what's been a really difficult period for the Scottish National Party, a difficult period that has gone on for some time, and indeed that difficult period has resulted in me becoming leader of the SNP only eight weeks ago - I came into office to fix that difficult period, and I'm committed to doing exactly that, because the SNP needs to be healed and it needs to heal its relationship with the people of Scotland, and I am absolutely to doing that - I want to make it clear that I take full responsibility for the SNP campaign and the outcome that has been achieved / that is what leadership is about; you plan your campaign, and you take responsibility for it when its completed, and I take full responsibility for that campaign - But I also out of that campaign commit us to listen and to learn from the very obvious setback that we had last night / when I stood for the leadership of the SNP, I promised to ensure a vibrant internal democracy within the party, as a means of creating strength and cohesion within the party / in the few weeks I've had as leader of the party, I've brought people together in the way I proposed and planned to do / but there is clearly more that is going to have to be don...
