NIIGATA, JAPAN - FEB. 14: Chinese Consulate General here hosted a for the first time a festival on February 14 to celebrate Chinese new year, five days ahead of their real new year's day, wishing the betterment of the bilateral friendship. Red lanterns and flags and small shops were put alongside a main street here just like a one-day Chinatown. Passers-by cheered as dragon dance and mask dances were performed. The plan to move the Chinese consulate general within Niigata is postponed affected by the recent sour bilateral relationship and this festival is seen as a gesture by the Chinese side to create friendly atmosphere here in this major city on the Sea of Japan across China.
