British writer, Rose Hacker, on gender roles within UK society; 1967

British writer, Rose Hacker, (who wrote the book, sex education book, 'Telling the Teenagers: A guide to parents, teachers and youth leaders'), filmed for a programme about young men with long hairstyles. Rose talks about the population and gender roles of men and women. She comments, "When you had more women than men, er, you had a Freudian interpretation, 'penis envy', er, women wanted to be men, girls wanted to be boys. Now, although Margaret Mead has found, in various tribes, womb envying patterns, we don't know how strong this is in this country, I've not met any boys who say they'd like to be girls. We want our boys to grow up to be real men, and we want our girls to grow up to be real women. But what is a 'real man' today?", UK; 1967 (LDC5482S - AEVZ001J)
