The Alamo Mission, known as The Alamo, was founded in the 18th century by Spanish missionaries for the education of American Indians. It was built out of locally quarried limestone. In 1836 it was the site of the famous Battle of the Alamo between Texan revolutionaries and the Mexican Army. Today it is a museum in the Alamo Plaza Historic District and part of the San Antonio Missions UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
