On July 13, 1985, Greenpeace's ship, the Rainbow Warrior was sunk by French secret agents. The ship was scheduled to depart for Moruroa to protest against French nuclear testing. One of the ship's crewmen was killed in the bombing. In 1987, after being awarded $8.155 million by the French government, Greenpeace resank the ship in Matauri Bay.
