Queen of Hearts 18th century antique playing card - stock photo

This is a quite rare survivor, an antique playing card (Queen of Hearts) from the 18th century (about 1780), making it over 230 years old. Cards such as this, depicting a person, are called face cards. Since it shows a Queen, it is also a court card. At this time, the court cards were not reversible, so this 'standing' court card has a 'right way up'. Also characteristic of this time are the square corners. This card was printed from a woodcut and then coloured, either by stencil or by hand-painting. The card is 64mm x 93mm, and the manufacturer is unknown.
