Flag of wales - stock photo

The flag of Gales features a red dragon in a walking stance as its central motif, set against a field divided horizontally into equal green and white sections. As with many heraldic symbols, the dragons depiction is not strictly standardized, resulting in various historical interpretations. This flag and its dragon are absent from the United Kingdoms flag (the Union Jack), since by the time of its creation in 1606, Wales had already been a principality of the Kingdom of England since the 13th century. The flag incorporates the Welsh dragon of Cadwaladr, King of Gwynedd, along with the Tudor colors of green and white. Henry VII utilized this flag during the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, subsequently bringing it to St Pauls Cathedral. The red dragon was then adopted as a heraldic supporter in the royal coat of arms of the House of Tudor to highlight their Welsh heritage. Officially designated as the national flag of Wales in 1959, the dragon also appears in the flags of several cities, including Cardiff, the capital of Wales.
