Man covered with blood, Ashura Day (Lebanon)
A young shi'ite Muslim man, his face covered with his own blood, participating in an Ashura Day commemoration, in Nabatieh (or Nabatiye, Nabatiyeh), Lebanon. Ashura Day is an annual festival amongst the Shi'ite Muslim community that mourns the death of Imam Husayn. Some adherents take part in self-flagellation and cut their foreheads with traditional swords and knives. Some faint after losing too much blood.
