Madonna In A Tree

A tree branch next to a construction site (the back of 422 E 72nd St) on East 71st Street was accidentally broken off by the swinging arm of a backhoe and exposed a 6-inch yellowish ivory statue of probably, the Virgin Mary with her hands outstretched. Since then the site appears to have become a small shrine, a local priest blessed the tree. Chris Cannella a construction site worker placed a rosary and flowers next to it and people stopped to pray, to touch the statue and place money in the wood cracks. It seems that the statue must have been placed at the junction of two branches years ago and the growing tree enveloped it over time. Another-passerby suggested that the tree was planted as an adult tree only a few years ago. September 18, 1990.
