P. vivax ring forms
This photomicrograph reveals the presence of two P. vivax ring forms within a single infected RBC. P. vivax rings have a large quantity of cytoplasm and a large chromatin dot, as well as occasional pseudopods. The RBCs are of normal, to 1.5x normal sized, round, and contain fine Schüffner's dots, and quite often contain multiple parasites. Image courtesy CDC/Dr. Mae Melvin, 1974.
