Blagdon Opencast Mine
The driver of a lorry which was being loaded at the Blagdon opencast site today in Northumberland had a narrow escape from injury when the 150 feet long jib of a walking dragline excavator collapsed on it. The jib bent and the top end fell gradually, crushing the cab of the lorry down to the steering wheel. The bucket of the excavator caused the tip-back of the lorry to rise and take the weight. Otherwise the cab would have been crushed flat. 21st February 1957. (Photo by Kemsley/Mirrorpix via Getty Images)
