EOKA Shooting On Ledra Street
The aftermath of an attack on three plain clothes British police sergeants, outside the Cyprus Mail office on Ledra Street in Nicosia, 28th September 1956. Seated at far right is Sergeant William Ivor Webb of the Worcestershire Police Force, who survived the attack despite being shot five times. Lying beside him and at far left are sergeants Cyril Thoroughgood and Hugh Carter, both of whom died at the scene. The man arriving at right is Victor Bodker, editor of the Cyprus Mail. One of the attackers was later found to be Nikos Sampson, then a journalist and a member of EOKA, and later de facto president of Cyprus for eight days in 1974. (Photo by Central Press/Getty Images)
