THAILAND-ASIA-QUAKE
Thai male elephant nicknamed Tong Deng (L) and female partner nicknamed Ploy (R) graze in the elephant trekking station across a devastated hotel in the tsunami-ravage tourist resort town of Khao Lak, Phang Nga province in southern Thailand 10 January 2005. Sensing imminent danger, Tong Deng and Ploy and other elephants rushed upwards to the forested area even before the first wave of the killer tsunami came crashing 26 December 2004 on the shores of Khao Lak. Elephants abound in Thailand where they are use for heavy work, a popular ride for tourists and during the tsunami disaster, assist in rescue missions in areas unreachable to heavy machines.
