Etruscan Tomb

Shown in this 1910 illustration is a late-sixth-century BC Etruscan sarcophagus from Caere (present-day Cerveteri). It is in the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome. It depicts a married couple reclining at a banquet together in the afterlife. The Etruscan civilization flourished, mostly in northern Italy, before the rise of Rome. The Etruscans flourished in central Italy from the 8th to 3rd century BCE, and one of their greatest legacies is the beautifully painted tombs found in many of their important towns—among them: Tarquinia, Cerveteri, Chiusi, and Vulci. .
