The temple is also known as Hana-dera flower temple or Sakura-dera cherry blossom temple because of the many cherry trees planted there, including the rare higan early blooming cherry tree. The temple grounds include a beautiful garden featuring early-flowering weeping cherries, pine trees, and sago palms. The temple is famous for its spectacular views overlooking Ito City and the sea. It is also the family temple and birthplace of Mokutaro Kinoshita, a literary figure from the nearby town of Ito. In the beautifully maintained pond garden there is a pond next to the main temple is Bentendo Hall devoted to the goddess Benten. It is one of the stops on the tour of the Seven Deities of Good Fortune trail. (Photo by John S Lander/LightRocket via Getty Images)
