Wroclaw, capital of Silesia, was under a variety of rulers throughout its over 1,000 year history, including the kingdoms of Bohemia, Poland, Prussia, Germany and the Hapsburgs. Before 1945 it was called Breslau and was the third largest city in Germany. Heavily damaged in the final months of World War II, its historic city center has since been restored.
