Site Of The Former Dorman Long Tower After Weekend Demolition
REDCAR, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 20: Rubble from the Gibbon Wilputte Coal bunker lies on the ground following the demolition of the Dorman Long Tower at Southbank on the former Redcar steelworks site on September 20, 2021 in Redcar, England. The Dorman Long tower, a coal bunker, conveyor system and a chimney were demolished at the site early on Sunday morning as part of the development plans for the former Teesworks site by the South Tees Development Corporation - part of Mayor Ben Houchen's Tees Valley Combined Authority. Redcar and Cleveland Council recently gave the go-ahead to demolish the iconic 1950's Dorman Long tower on the former steelworks site but Historic England later confirmed it had awarded Grade II Listed status to the building which temporarily stopped demolition plans for the tower. Last week it was stripped of that protection after the intervention of new Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries and the demolition took place early on Sunday morning. (Photo by Ian Forsyth/Getty Images )
