GUATEMALA-JUSTICE-HUMAN RIGTHS-RIOS MONTT
Pictures of people disappeared during the country's civil war are displayed outside the court during a hearing to former Guatemalan de facto President (1982-1983) and retired General Jose Efrain Rios Montt (not pictured) in Guatemala City on January 28, 2013. In a historic decision, a Guatemalan court announced today that Rios Montt, 86, will face trial for the genocide of indigenous peoples during his rule, becoming the first former president to be prosecuted for this crime in the country. The landmark decision marks the first time that genocide proceedings have been brought in the country over the 36-year civil war that ended in 1996, leaving an estimated 200,000 people dead, according to the UN.
