Pharmacist at Potter & Clarks in Farringdon Street, London, holding a large bowl teeming with medical leeches, as his assistant watches from behind an advertising display. Leeches have been used in medicine for centuries. In the past, they bled patients of the 'ill humours' thought to cause illness. Today, leeches are used to relieve blood congestion during delicate operations. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs.
