New Buildings Of The Tuileries: The Emperor’S Gateway
New buildings of the Tuileries [Palace, in Paris]: the Emperor's Gateway, 1869. 'The entry to the courtyard of the Tuileries was formerly placed almost at the foot of the Pavilion de Flore: it is at present situated between the sixth and seventh bays in the fore part of the building. It is surmounted with a broken curved fronton, and is adorned with braceleted columns, executed in the same style as those of the gateway of the Imperial stables on the quay side. The fronton is surmounted by a ship's prow, a trophy of arms, and some statues executed by M. Gruyère'. The Tuileries Palace, dating from 1564, was the Parisian residence of French monarchs, from Henry IV to Napoleon III, until it was burned by the Paris Commune in 1871.
