Sewing Under Spitalfields

Men and women sewing in 'Mickey's Shelter', an improvised air-raid shelter in the vaults under the Fruit and Wool Exchange in Brushfield Street, Spitalfields, London, 1941. The vaults had been used in previous air-raids, but without organization or proper facilities, conditions were overcrowded and unhygienic. Mickey Davis, an east end optician, took charge and established a shelter committee to set hygiene standards and to organize cleaning rotas, a first aid room and separate facilities for men, women and families.
