BRAZIL-AIDS-PROTEST

Members of the "Group for Life," rally on the steps of the Finance Ministry in Rio de Janeiro 08 September 1999 to protest a possible lack of free medicine to treat AIDS. Some 70,000 AIDS patients in Brazil, who have been receiving free medicine for the past three years, are threatened to see the practice stop if the government does not release 79 million USD to import the necessary drugs. Brazilian Health Minister Jose Serra has recently declared that because of the devaluation of the local currency, the budget allocated to the project will only last until October 1999.
