A Massai tribesman stands on the slopes
A Massai tribesman stands on the slopes leading up to the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, northern Tanzania, 30 August 2007. Ol Doinyo Lengai, a Massai name that translates to "Mountain of God", is part of the volcanic system of the Great Rift Valley in Eastern Africa. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area or NCA is a conservation area situated 180 km west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania and plays host to almost every individual species of wildlife in East Africa. Created by the British authorities in 1959, Maasai who had long since inhabited the area continued to live in the new park, however repeated conflicts with park authorities over land use led to the Massai's eviction from the land.
