NUSSEIRAT, -: Masked Palestinians from the Hamas movement hit a portrait of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon depicting him as a vampire with axes and slippers during a rally in the Nusseirat refugee camp in the Gaza Strip to mark the group's 16th anniversary, 12 December 2003. Up to 40,000 Palestinians converged from the northern towns of Beit Hanun and Beit Lahia to Hamas' birthplace in the Gaza refugee camp of Jabalya. Hamas, an Arab acronym for Islamic Resistance Movement, was founded on December 14, 1987, at the beginning of the first intifada and has built much of its popularity in the occupied territories.
