SRINAGAR, JAMMU AND KASHMIR, INDIA - 2025/01/12: Indian paramilitary soldier stands alert along a road in Srinagar ahead of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kashmir on January 13 to inaugurate the Z-Morh tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh highway in Gagangir Ganderbal.  The Z-Morh Tunnel, a 6.5-kilometer (4.039 miles) two-lane tunnel built at a cost of $26 billion, is set to provide all-weather connectivity to the key tourist destination Sonamarg along the snow avalanche-prone Srinagar-Leh highway. The tunnel is part of a larger plan to ensure year-round access to Ladakh, which is typically cut off in winter due to heavy snow and avalanches. Strategically, it will offer faster, more reliable access for India's military personnel deployed in Ladakh, a region with sensitive borders shared with Pakistan and China, where tensions have risen since 2020. In October 2024, the tunnel became the site of a deadly militant attack, marking the first such attack on an infrastructure project in the disputed Himalayan region. Seven construction workers, including a doctor, were killed, and five others were injured. (Photo by Faisal Bashir/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)
