ITALY - 2023/10/07: In the gorge of the Vajont torrent, the imposing structure of the Vajont dam is pictured. The Vajont Dam, once one of the world's tallest dams, is now unused due to a tragic event. On October 9, 1963, a section of Monte Toc, a mountain north of Venice in the Dolomites, slid into the reservoir below the dam. This caused a huge wave in the lake that spilled over the dam, resulting in extensive flooding and destruction in the Piave Valley. More than 2,000 lives were lost in this catastrophic event.
