French Coming Into The Prussian Lines For Bread
French coming into the Prussian lines for bread, at the ferry of Sevres, 1871. Franco-Prussian War: a 'painful exhibition of distress was afforded by the starving French who came within the German lines to beg for bread, during the first two days of the armistice. The Engraving on our front page, from a sketch by our Artist at the German head quarters, represents this melancholy subject. The sketch was made at the Sevres ferry, where crowds of the poor people crossed the river with their baskets or bags to receive what might be given. Each person had to show a written pass at the landing-place'. From "Illustrated London News", 1871. Creator: Unknown. (Photo by The Print Collector/Heritage Images via Getty Images)
